DiCaprio tells how Inception went Solar
Christopher Nolan’s Summer 2010 Blockbuster smash “Inception, featuring superstar studmuffin Leo DiCaprio, shined on more fronts that just the Box Office (so far there has been a worldwide gross over over $240 Million). I loved the film – it was magnificent, profound and intelligent – but today I focus not on the celluloid but on the mechanism behind it. Particularly the environmentally friendly mechanism. The film’s sets were powered by the world’s largest mobile solar power system, the S48T. This system was constucted by Pure Power Distribution is is the first of its kind capable of powering a movie base camp solely on the sun’s blessed rays. 12 metres long, 3.5m metres wide, it uses 3x 24,000W Xantrex inverter banks, 3x 2,550 Ah deep cycle battery banks and is decked out with 7,200 watts of solar panels. solar panels.
The S48 is designed to replace a 1,400 to 1,800 Amp diesel generator, which release approximately a tonne or more of carbon dioxide per day of running.
Inception isn’t the first movie to be produced with the assistance of solar energy. Pure Power has just supplied a system for a 5th feature film, providing clean solar power to the base camp of Steve Carrell’s latest feature film project and last year provided solar power to the Criminal Minds set.
Pure Power Distribution has partnered with the Environmental Media Association (EMA) to help entertainment companies green their productions using clean, mobile solar power.
And Dicaprio, a major face for environmental change, said in a recent interview:
“A lot of this movie was made with solar power. It’s the first movie I got to do with solar power. I had a conversation about it with Alan Horn, who’s the head of Warner Bros. The generators that we had on the set were all powered by solar energy. It’s going to be a big conversion to do stuff like that every day, not just in making movies but everything in the world. We do a lot of things in the world that are wasteful. We keep talking about this all the time. Hopefully, fingers crossed, with these small steps, we’ll make that transition on a much larger scale in the future.”
Everyone knows that Hollywood attracts a larger flock than most in its trend-setting. The larger the better in this case.
