Sometimes the simple shout-out can be an activity to be proud of. It doesn’t require much journalistic skill, but one feels they have added a little piece to the puzzle. So here’s a shout-out to the campaign aptly named “Stand Up, Speak Out“. It began in 2007 as part of the United Nations Millennium Campaign. Days to look out for – note them down – are September 17th-19th, 2010. These three days of mobilization:

enable all constituencies and anyone wanting to be a part of the mobilization to organize and participate in a wide range of events, relevant actions and initiatives to show their support for the achievement of the MDGs and have their voices heard articulating their demands for delegations attending the Summit.

The Pressure Point:

When world leaders gather at the United Nations for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Review Summit in September, the voices of their citizens will follow them, telling them, loudly and clearly: “We will no longer stay seated or silent in the face of poverty and the broken promises to end it!’

Their Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) are founded on the following declaration:

We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than a billion of them are currently subjected.

There are eight MDG goals. Goals we should stand up and raise our voices over… goals both thorough and highly ambitious.. but undoubtedly possible. And if all of them were met? Well, one could sit comfortably and breathe in the air of Utopia. So. A Guide to Utopia before your very eyes:

8 GOALS

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

2. Achieve universal primary education

3. Promote gender equality and empower women

4. Reduce child mortality

5. Improve maternal health

6. Combat HIV/AIDs, malaria, and other diseases

7. Ensure environmental sustainability

8. Develop a global partnership for development
