The Urban Times Visits Pecan Street
Arrowhead Films and Workforce Solutions put together this video edit on the wonderful Pecan Street Project. A $10.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy got the ball rolling on this $29 million mixed-use development project in Austin, Texas that consists of more than 1,000 homes and 75 businesses. It is the most ambitious city-wide clean energy laboratory in the US, possibly the world. That rare occasion where idealism meets teamwork and action to take shape as a reality. This is their mission statement:
We will establish the City of Austin as America’s clean energy laboratory. We will design and implement an energy generation and management system that generates a power plant’s worth of power from clean sources within the city limits and delivers it over an advanced delivery system that allows for unprecedented customer energy management and conservation.
We will invite public and corporate participation in this transition and will use Austin’s energy grid as a test-bed for technologies, products and services that will transform our energy system.
We at the Urban Times are proud to have partnered with the Clean Energy Venture Summit (CEVS) 2010 which, on Sept. 30th, will bring together a selection of 20 companies (click here for link) to pitch their smart-grid/smart-home innovation technologies along with business plans to a panel of judges. The main prize they’re competing for is a guaranteed shot to validate their technology at the Pecan Street Project. We are also excited to hear from keynote speaker John Hofmeister, former president of Shell Oil and author of “Why we hate the oil companies. We intend to work with the CEVS to bring you up to date information and media before and after the event. Exciting times for all!
