Edison’s invention get’s an Upgrade

Thomas Edison‘s invention get’s an upgrade. It seems that LED’s have dethroned the florescent bulb as the most energy-efficient means to light your home! An upcoming range of bulbs from various brands such as Philips will edge out the typical flourescent by drawing 12 watts or less, containing no mercury, and lasting a minumum 25,000 hours – three times as long! Also, the shape is more conventional.

Previous problems with LED’s were the bluish light they emitted, an over-concentration of the light beam and overheated chips. LED’s were widely used for decades in digital clocks, watch light and cell phones and have been clustered together to illuminate traffic lights and achieve the image on large outdoor television screens. It was always impractical for everyday application because it was built around costly semiconductor technology. But the price of this semi-conductor material has dropped in recent years.

According to HowStuffWorks.com

LED bulbs are lit solely by the movement of electrons. Unlike incandescents, they have no filament that will burn out; and unlike CFLs, they contain no mercury or other toxic substances. Proponents say LEDs can last some 60 times longer than incandescents and 10 times longer than CFLs. And unlike incandescents, which generate a lot of waste heat, LEDs don’t get especially hot and use a much higher percentage of electricity for directly generating light.
