Anton Corbijin: A Master of the Visual Image?

A Visual Master?

Alongside his directorial prowess, Anton Corbijin is an accomplished Photographer. These high-contrast works reflect a keen eye for character, mood and detail.

His second feature, The American‘ is being released in the UK today. His first feature, Control was a vibrant and skillfully rendered monochrome portrait of Ian Curtis; the enigmagtic, yet tragic face of Joy Division. ‘The American’, starring George Clooney has been out in America for ages now, and received a luke-warm critical response. Is this the because they were expecting a Hollywood vehicle for an action-packed assassin film and instead were treated with a slow-burning, if highly fashioned Indie? Or was is just plain mediocre? See it and decide for yourself.

Synopsis

After a job in Sweden dissolves into fiasco, American assassin Jack (George Clooney), flees to the Italian countryside, seeking sanctuary in a small medieval town. While there, Jack accepts the task to build a weapon for a dark, clairvoyant associate, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). Gloating in the beautiful, placid mountains of Abruzzo, Jack befriends local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and coddles in a fervent affair with a beautiful woman, Clara (Violante Placido). Everything seems wonderful when the affair becomes more then just that; however by neglecting his former life, his former ways Jack surely risks writing his own destiny.

If the American doesn’t satiate your bloodthirsty (and despicable) urge for skillfully executesd slaughter then don’t fret!

Here’s Ten Memorable Movie Assassins who definately didn’t disappoint.
