Visit New York: The Farm City
I came across this awesome video depicting the growth of Urban Farming – still very much in its infant stages – in New York City. Petrina TV says of the mini-doc:
In order to show how vegetables are grown in New York, we reversed what the plants do: We harvest in spring what we filmed in fall.
The short film has the sort of quirky feel you would naturally expect from an eco-doc about the coolest city on the planet; gorgeous cinematography with inventive use of some very long lenses, voice-overs, personal interviews, and timelapses galore of the bustling city scape. We see how this concrete city is sprouting new life as a variety of produce – squash, basil, peppers, pumpkins to name a few – is grown directly above New Yorker’s heads. We see the community food programme, The Garden of Eden in based in East Harlem, which grows and gives out free produce, the Green Grange rooftop farm in Brooklyn, which is attempting to scale a sustainable business model, and we learn of the People’s Garden NYC, an organisation petitioning to plant a school garden in front of city hall.
Urban farming dramatically reduces the cost and carbon footprint of transport, and it puts the immensity of New York’s open unutilised space – specifically sunlit rooftops – to valuable use. And the best thing about it is there is (for now anyway) no competition with developers.
Wonderful post. As a girl i was floored when i learned that much of where i grew up (south bronx, nyc) was originally farmland and i just couldn't seem to reconcile this fact with the amazing concrete jungle that surrounded me everyday. This film brings back this poignant moment and is a bright spot in my day today! Kudos!!!
