Acid Test: A Documentary
“Scientists refer to Ocean Acidification as the other carbon problem. The other of course, is global warming.”
This gorgeous 20-minute documentary entitled “Acid Test” was produced by Erin Kiley & Daniel Hinerfeld (who Directed alongside Tristan Bayer) for the Natural Resourced Defense Council (NRDC). It describes in depth the worrying phenomenon known as ocean acidification.
At the centre of this destructive process there is carbon dioxide. Since the Industrial REvolution we have emitted ever more CO2 into the atmosphere, and one quater of this is being absorbed into the oceans. This triggers a series of chemical reactions (pictured above) producing carbonic acid, both lowering the pH levels and decreasing the concentration of carbonation, which is terrible for coral reefs whose foundational skeletal structures rely on carbonate. The result is coral bleaching and the destruction of their extended ocean eco-systems.
In “Acid Test”, Sigourney Weaver narrates to warn us that soon, if things don’t change, we may be responsible for changes to marine life on a scale that is unprecedented for tens of millions of years.

[...] Ironically, this is also another problem; the increase in CO2 emissions has created a cocktail of acidification of our oceans and a weakening of their absorbing properties by as much as 50%. CCS is a process that describes [...]
