Light Brings Life To The Living Light House
The Living Light house uses glass for transparency, day lighting, and views to the surrounding environment. Alternating translucent and transparent panes allow for views of the landscape while maintaining a sense of privacy. The double facade along the north and south walls becomes the stage upon which the building comes to life. Sandwiched between the glass is a motorized blind system, automatically controlled to optimize lighting conditions and privacy. Natural light is also regulated by the deep overhangs of the solar array allowing for ample shade, while decreasing the internal heat gains.
The Living Light house is designed to make soft transitions from natural to electric light. Just as daylight enters the home through these facades, so to will electric light. Embedded within the double façade and hidden from direct view to prevent glare, the LED electric lighting in the floor and ceiling will be capable of approximating the visual comfort levels of daylight as well as other theatrical effects. Lighting sensors in the home control the lighting to maintain a consistent and comfortable lighting level at all times. As the sun sets, the color-changing LED strips along the facade gradually fade into use for a seamless transition from day to night. A few discrete task lights will be used to supplement the integrated façade lighting and natural daylighting. Through the home automation system, the homeowner can also program preferred conditions for a variety of tasks, such as watching a movie, entertaining dinner guests, or even going on vacation.
