Apple’s Project Dolphin Solar Farm
After the demise of the great Steve Jobs, business at Apple is still moving full-steam ahead. In June of this year a brand new Apple data center miraculously appeared on Google Maps, in Catawba County, North Carolina, and is thought to be the house of the new iCloud data streams. The station is enormous, sprawling itself across 500,000 square feet of land, and requires equally enormous amounts of energy to power itself.
Fortunately, Apple have a tendency toward renewable energy at their data plants (their plants in Texas, California and Ireland are all 100% run on renewable energy). The new southern Catawba County data center will reportedly be installing a vast 171-acre wide solar farm as to minimize the carbon footprint and keep up with their sustainability promises. The solar farm will sit directly across the road from the data center and will feed directly into it.
As of now, “Project Dolphin Solar Farm A Expanded” is, typical of Apple, a mystery to the local county officials and planners, however a movement away from the data center using the local energy supply (which is largely coal and nuclear sourced electricity) should be a welcome idea to all. Although quotes from local officials (as well as the fact that Apple have made no reply to news corporations) make it seem as though the legitimacy of the claims could lie in the balance, let’s hope it goes ahead:
Information about the solar farm will come when Apple applies for a building permit, said Toni Norton, a county engineer who has inspected Apple’s erosion control plans for the site.
The county has not yet been asked to approve a building permit for the property. Neither has the town of Maiden, said town manager Todd Herms. [Source]
Hi It's great news..and also on the day that Facebook have announced that they are building a massive data centre in Sweden..which will also use renewable energy. Despite Apple's failings with their supply chain/Chinese factories..they have been using renewables for many years. Similarly, Google have invested bucket loads of $$$ not just in powering their own products..but also in the form of loans to US consumers who want ton install solar. As we reported on our site http://www.greenabode.co.uk/facebook-google-green... there seems to be a healthy competition between the tech. giants as to who will be the greenest. Compared to most other industries..it's refreshing to see that the world's biggest companies in this sector (and in any sector) seem to be battling out. That's got to be good news for everyone..and most importantly for the environment.
