If you were an architect, what sort of home would you design for yourself?

Architect couple Sarah Featherstone and Jeremy Young who live and work together as architects in London,  answered this question in such style that they were awarded for it by the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (the voice of prestigious RIBA in Wales). Visit the Brecon Beacons in Powys and you will see the Ty Hedfan, The Flying House as it rises majestically above the Afon Ysgir river.

The home, which the pair funded themselves, is built out of traditional materials and has been recognised as one of the best new homes in Wales. Due to locational challenges and “Because of planning controls, you can’t build right up to the river, so we managed to build right over the river bank.” (BBC)

The cantilever design merges in with the natural surroundings, hovering above the river and amidst the growing ash trees on the river’s bank. Mr Young said to the BBC that:

“It was an opportunity for ourselves to practise what we preach, in terms of architecture,”

ITV Wales also got some footage of the home, that you can see here.
