Image of the Week: Black and White Beauties, and not Just Zebras
Taken in Singapore Zoo the Hamadryas Baboon (Papio hamadryas) is a baboon from the Old World monkey family. It typically comes from the Red Sea in Egypt to Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. Baboons are also native to Southwestern Arabia, especially in the mountains of Yemen where predators are not as common as in central Africa. The Hamadryas Baboon was a sacred animal to the ancient Egyptians and so it is also known as the Sacred Baboon.
The Giraffe Centre is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization, which was founded in 1979 in a bid to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. It lost its natural habitat in Western Kenya to agriculture and there were only 130 left in the wild; now this number has increased to approximately 500.
Taken in the Mara Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya these Zebras brilliantly show that they like to hang out together in groups. Their stripes are actually a useful tool in confusing predators as it makes it hard for them to be seen at a distance. Scientists believe that zebras can recognize family members and friends according to their stripes and each species of zebras has a different pattern of stripes all together.

Wonderful images, they were truly breathtaking. On the Giraffe Image, it has captured all the details of the giraffe, even down to droplets of water threaded on to his/her whiskers.
