London’s Policy on Climate Change Should Begin in Beijing, or Should It?

In this wonderfully animated iq2 short George Monbiot and Simon Zadek debate about whether London’s climate change policy should begin in Beijing. Simon Zadek argues that even if the U.K mitigates its total emissions by 20% by 2020 this will mean we’re only contributing 1% to the total amount that needs to be offset globally . He says we cannot deny how small the U.K. is in a global landscape and must look to bigger powers, such as China, to lead the fight against climate change. Simply: London’s climate policy should start in Beijing.

George Monbiot, on the other hand, argues that London’s climate policy must begin at home. China is emitting 5.3 tonnes per person whereas ours is 8.5. How can we unload the responsibility onto Beijing without making any attempts to do it ourselves? He argues that climate change must begin and end in London.
