Moments in Antarctica

A relaxing seal. François Grumelin-Sohn
How many people can lay claim to having visited Antarctica?
François Grumelin-Sohn is one who can. A tourist, François, joined a cruise company called Le Ponant for ten days going from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula. On his trip he managed to capture some truly amazing sequences of the landscape and its wildlife. Absorb the stark whites and pale blues of the Antarctic environment.
He shot everything with a Nikon D3100 and a selection of lenses, the most used of which was a wide angle lens. The humble tourist said,
“My head is full of penguins and I just wanted to share this… I wish I could have had access to professional equipment, but anyway… As I didn’t have any tripod, I did my best to shoot it properly. I hope you will enjoy the video.”
Well, François, Urban Times loved the truly D.I.Y. nature of the footage, which is as stunning as any National Geographic but without the big budget. He also took hundreds of pictures, which you can see in the album, Antarctica: Moments. The pacy, unique music is by the brilliant, but little known François de Roubaix. The tracks arte called ‘L’adieu à l’Antarctique 1974″ and “La Frite équatoriale”.
If you want to really delve into some Antarctic geography, you can Google the locations he visited and shot at. They sound like something out of a children’s’ adventure novel: Paulet Island, Brown Bluff, Cuverville Island, Melchior Islands, Paradise Bay, Neko Harbour, Port Lockroy & Deception Island.
Absolutely stunning video and pictures. Such a beautiful place. I am fortunate enough to be visiting Antarctica in March 2012 and if this is what I can expect then I cannot wait. Hopefully my own video footage and pictures will be as good. I have a Nikon D5000 and several lenses so would be interested to hear what lenses you used.
