Different Faces of Assam

The beauty of India is indescribable, words alone cannot do it justice, you would just have to see it for yourself. One aspect that has surprised me about the north east region (one of the most unexplored regions in India) is that there is a special diversity in culture, appearance of people, food, and music. This caught me off guard because before moving to India I had a more narrow viewpoint on the people of India. In Assam alone you find a very eclectic mix of faces where some look Oriental, Spanish, Thai; you can find all types of faces here. Learning this changed my whole perspective on Indian culture and enlightened me to strive to understand this country even more.

Even some natives of India will go through their lives never seeing the different faces of the north east; some may not even know where Assam is. Almost all Bollywood films depict only northern Indian characters and so the world is familiar with one kind. Recently, I visited a rural Assamese Village called Anandapur Village, I was completely amazed by the beauty and the diverse mix of people and facial features. My colleague and I were the first Americans they had ever met; it was truly an honor to brighten the faces of this Village even if it was just for a couple of days. I dedicate this post to all the faces of Assam especially the people of Anandapur Village who most of the world will never see.

Nice photos. Thanks Jobelle! Awesome work!

Jobelle, thanks for sharing these with me, I love them! I too really like the close perspective you took on the faces.

A window to the world of Assam. Awesome photos!

These are amazing. I love really close portrait shots. It reminded me of my favourite photograph EVER by Jackie Nickerson of Christian Malala (called 'La Vie En Sape'): http://si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/OB-PU84... (I couldn't find a better quality version)
