It’s Not OK to Drink Everyday

Alcohol Unit Measurement Guide under the current system. Apparently this is misleading; we need at least a 2-day break each week. Office for National Statistics guide found on BBC.co.uk

How Much Alcohol do you Drink?

adults should take a 2-3 day break from alcohol each week

Currently, across the UK alcohol consumption advice is given in daily units. The crux of the matter is that over-eighteens in the UK are told that the maximum daily dose is:

“No more than 3-4 units for a man, and 2-3 for a woman”.

But according to a Group of MPs from the Commons Science and Technology Select Committee, this advice is not good enough.

They recommend advisory suggestions already in place in Scotland. Simply, adults should take a 2-3 day break from alcohol each week. Andrew Miller an MP on the Committee told the BBC, that daily drinking can negatively affect the liver, circulatory system, high blood pressure and even memory.

People just don’t know what’s going on inside their body, beyond avoiding a hangover.

What is a Unit?

Many people do not actually know what a unit is when in its most common form of wine and beer. People are prone to under-estimate because they are under-informed. Thus alcohol distributors are taking up stauncher information policies on bottles, and shops are beginning to build more awareness also.

For more advice on units see Drinkaware.co.uk’s Guide to Measurement.

Lateral Thinking Question

Stephen Fry on Question Time:

How big would a cloud need to be to in order to dispense for me, my recommended daily allowance of wine?

It is interesting that Fry is advocating we drink a touch more than even the original daily allowance, based upon life expectancy statistics. Seems we’ll have to wait for more science…
