Mr. Daisey Is Seeing Apple In A New Light
Listen to this story – it’s important: This American life – Mr Daisey and the Apple Factory (audio)
If you haven’t heard Mike Daisey talk, then make this the one you listen to as it’s life altering. Yes, he is a riveting master storyteller, and has been called so by everyone who has heard him. But this story, Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory, really will change your life because we hear the story behind who makes our Apple products. He even admits that he is seeing Apple in a new light, and is on a mission to make us all aware of it.
There simply aren’t any words that can do justice to this story. We’ve all heard the rumors and read the news stories, but this is the first time that one of us has been taken right to the doorstep to see how the people of Shenzhen live and work. It’s a little like watching the history of the West, except that China is a country that already has a longer history of its own. And yet globalization is changing even a country such as this in ways that we are only just hearing about. Change doesn’t discriminate, especially when the future is at stake.
No matter where you go in this world, whether we consider it a third world country or a first world country, conditions are not as dissimilar as we like to think. As long as people are involved, there will be a will to act in similar ways because deep down we all want the same things. Those similarities are what’s going to move us all into the twenty-first century… finally.
But there are immediate things that we can take away from this story:
- Our products involve humans in their manufacturing. This thought should hopefully move us to act responsibly in how we view our possessions and consumerism.
- This broadcast was made by public radio (WBEZ). We should thank them for their dedication. Their work serves as further proof of the importance of the arts in our lives.
- Research before you choose anything. Education will help us realize the real problems, so that we can all work together to find responsible solutions.
- Mike’s story will remind you of your humanity. It should be passed around, so that everyone realizes that we have a lot to fix in this world. Please do so.
But nothing is lost if we learn the moral of the story. And there it is: Morals. We all need one another, so we should take better care of each other. Now we need to figure out the steps to make it happen for this entire world. We can no longer deny that it’s long overdue. Mike feels the same way, so let’s join him on this quest.
