Symmetry in Photography

Symmetry is something described in parallel. In photography it conveys balance and proportion. It is a form of pattern that is often associated with “perfection” and illustrates spatial awareness, often through reflection and rotation. Symmetry can also occur accidentally in nature and the built environment. Symmetry and patterns surround us and can make for very striking imagery, especially in situations where they are not expected. Often by breaking pattern or symmetry, you can introduce tension to an image. Using symmetry or asymmetry as an artistic tool allows one to fully explore different compositions.

Over The Bridge 2011. An image by Stuart Russell voted runner up in Britain’s Best View. This image has been exhibited all over Britain and sold all over the globe. This image is an example of symmetry.

Reflection: Reflection in photography can lead to beautiful imagery. It can often change an average image into something new and vibrant. Reflection can be achieved using anything reflective such as water, mirror, windows or light.

Rotation: taking a single image then rotating and multiplying it can achieve Rotation. It can be used in abstract imagery. It is often seen in symbols, flags and logos but can be applied to photography.

Below is a diagram to show reflection and rotation:
