#UrbanPixel | Our Urban Weather

SERIES: theurbn.com/category/feature/urbanpixel

#UrbanPixel – A feature series on Urban Times that documents the issues and scenes of the urban landscape through photography. By visually representing an interesting topic, concern or element of our cities, we hope to create a catalogue of solutions-based content that treats the eye. We are encouraging participation from everyone! So if you feel you have the adequate photography and backstory, send us a tweet @theurbantimes, include the #UrbanPixel hashtag, and a link to the photo piece so we can re-tweet our favorites, and include them in future #UrbanPixel posts. Read the full instructions at the end of the article.

Urban Weather Photos

Call me crazy, but I love bad weather. It wasn’t always this way, but once I caught my first photograph of lightning a few years ago I was hooked. So now, any time a storm is in the forecast in I’m patiently waiting on my Chicago balcony for something interesting, especially roiling clouds & cracking lightning.

The great thing about weather in the urban environment, particularly inclement weather, is that we often have an interesting foreground that can’t be found out in more rural areas. Tall buildings and sprawling urban landscapes can give you a much better sense of the immense size and power some of these storms pack.

So in this week’s #UrbanPixel, we want to see some photos of the extreme weather in your city; rain, snow, lighting, dust storms, clouds, wind, typhoons, blizzards, hail, haboobs, shelf clouds, hurricanes, waterspouts, etc. If it takes place in an urban setting, and you wouldn’t want to be outside (if not for photographing it) we want to see it! Just make sure you follow the directions at the end of the post.

Check out the rest of my storm photos below and on the following pages.

This cloud made an a appearance when it was backlit by a bright flash of cloud to cloud lightning. Otherwise invisible at night, this impressive formation reminds me of a soft-serve ice-cream cone and/or a stellar nebula. // Photographer: Nick Ulivieri

the best collection yet!

Thank you Mother Goose! I'm glad you've enjoyed. This is definitely one of my favorite subjects to shoot. I'll do my best to keep the subsequent posts as good - if not better!

Wow, Nick, you really have an amazing eye (and timing) for weather! I love Undulatus Asperatus - it's so eerie and yet beautiful. Clouds are fascinating, and you show why! Thanks for these images.

Thanks! You are welcome, and thanks for the nice words. I really enjoy watching the storms in the spring/summer, so photographing them is a bonus. If anything, patience and persistence are the keys to weather photography. I usually take hundreds and hundreds of pictures per storm, in hopes of ending up with a few good ones. If you can perch yourself somewhere safe before the storm starts you can really capture some interesting clouds - same goes for after a storm starts heading out.

OH my Gosh. Nick Your just astoundingly awesome. That final image looks like something from "Thor".
