Image of the Week: Destruction
These photos were taken in some Beijing Hutong; a very small street or alley. There is a Hutong, or a remnant of a very small one, adjacent to Jinguomen Station in Beijing. When I first visited in 2010, it was a small enclave nestled against the back of the subway station. Fruit vendors would sell their wares early in the morning. In season, the fresh dates were bursting with sweetness. Over the last 12 months, demolition crews have moved in and 70% of the Hutong has been destroyed.
Two unusual aspects: (1) there are still families living amongst the rubble, making do the best they can. (2) Rather than being carted away, the rubble has been piled up in heaps where the small houses once stood. At the current rate, little will be left in six months and likely the few, remaining, resilient residents will have no choice but to relocate. Then, another swatch of fabric of traditional life in Beijing will be torn off, leaving the ever increasing new developments, soulless but entirely functional.
This photo represents an unusual way to make wall repairs to a crumbling house.
When your house is in shambles and without modern conveniences, string a line across two level points, even amongst the rubble of a demolished home.
My eye caught a random playing card….a memory of a more vibrant and social community that once stood here.
There’s no room (literally) in the home for laundry so the back alleyway which passes for a street will have to do.
Another view of the demolition and destruction, a fallen tree occupies part of the crumbling landscape.
