Ecstatic Meditations: Abundance

Abundance

“Technology is a resource liberating mechanism and scarcity is contextual… soon it will be a post scarcity world” - Jason Silva

Introducing “Abundance“, our third release in the breathtaking series: “Ecstatic Meditations“.

“Ecstatic Mediations” centers around a selection of stunning short films by filmaker, TV personality, futurist and epiphany addict Jason Silva. These explosive films delve into the human condition. We will be releasing one of Jasons’ shorts a day for the coming week. Consider them the online equivalent of a caffeine jolt, a metaphor which Jason embraces, aptly terming them “shots of philosophical espresso”. He says:

“These ecstatic meditations explore various facets of the human condition through the lens of imagination, ecstasy, love, beauty, etc. The idea is that each vignette immerses you in a feeling, a concept, a way of seeing the world. Similarly to my techno-utopian rants, these are meant to ‘epiphanize’ and provide an artful antidote to existential despair. I think Urban Times is just the kind of media enterprise to push forth this memetic content! So thank you!!”

This instalment was inspired by the new book ABUNDANCE, written by X-Prize Founder and Singularity University co-founder, Peter Diamandis and writer Steven Kotler. In it, they explain how exponentially emerging technologies can be leveraged to address humanity’s grand challenges… Jason captures this concept brilliantly in two minutes.

Meditation enriches our perspectives and increases our understanding and tolerance of others. It helps to reduce restless thinking and calms worry. This adds up to increased peace, wisdom and a consciousness beyond our egos. Going into nothingness or emptiness equals increased ability to creatively construct everything.

Well, I am not exactly contradicting what he is saying; I am establishing context, something Jason Silva enjoys not doing. No self-respecting scientist would dare say, at this moment in human evolution and human knowledge, that "the forces of economics, culture, and human intent, have trumped geology". The arrogance and ignorance of this statement is stunning--stunning--to me. Manhattan is just an example...a poor example, as I had stated. There's nothing to trump geologically there. There are no earthquakes, there are no hurricanes, there are no tornadoes, it has a temperate climate...what's there to trump? His example is an inappropriate one if he wanted to demonstrate human dominance over geology, and most likely the reason he chose Manhattan is because he personally likes the city. His bias is as clear as day. The reason why what I say is valid and is not necessarily in contradiction to what Silva says is because Silva doesn't say anything at all. The majority of his content is just regurgitation of platitudes and sentimental cajoling. While he does have a few good ideas, most of his content is merely a way to attract an audience. Real science is boring: Making naive, declarative statements, such as "humans have trumped geology", is fun.
