Ecstatic Meditations: Imagination

Imagination

“Because we can imagine, we are free.” – Jason Silva

“Imagination” is the first part of a new series we are launching called “Ecstatic Meditations“.

“Ecstatic Mediations” centers around a selection of stunning short films by filmaker, TV personality, futurist and epiphany addict Jason Silva. These explosive films delve into the human condition. We will be releasing one of Jasons’ shorts a day for the coming week. Consider them the online equivalent of  a caffeine jolt, a metaphor which Jason embraces, aptly terming them “shots of philosophical espresso”. He says:

“These ecstatic meditations explore various facets of the human condition through the lens of imagination, ecstasy, love, beauty, etc. The idea is that each vignette immerses you in a feeling, a concept, a way of seeing the world. Similarly to my techno-utopian rants, these are meant to ‘epiphanize’ and provide an artful antidote to existential despair. I think Urban Times is just the kind of media enterprise to push forth this memetic content! So thank you!!”

What better way to begin this series than with that most pivotal and unique of faculties, the human imagination.

Jason dedicated these videos to: Carl Sagan, Ray Kurzweil, Timothy Leary, Buckminster Fuller, Stewart Brand, The Imaginary Foundation, Chris Anderson from TED, Linda Mishkin, Richard Feynman, and all the curious and the wonderful…

About Jason Silva

We were first made aware of Jason when Charlie Hilton stumbled across two of his astounding Shorts, and published them in the post “To Understand is to Perceive Patterns“. Since then, I met with Jason in London and was blown away by his awesomeness. To talk to Jason is to be in awe. Not only is he astonishingly bright and energetic, but I was amazed to discover that his off-the-wall wisdom really does come out as quickly in real life as on camera!

Jason used to work as a Host and Producer on Current TV - now the fastest growing cable network in TV history. He has been described as;

“part Timothy Leary, part Ray Kurzweil, and part Neo from The Matrix.”

And;

“A Digital DJ, a re-vitalizer and remixer of optimism, and above all, a curator: of ideas, of inspiration, and of awe… like a trumpet player or modern-day digital Mingus, he jams, riffs and rhapsodizes through a tumbling thicket of ideas with such a sharp and vital alacrity that it can take the breath away. He’s a modern performance philosopher, reviving the vibe of Tim Leary and Buckminster Fuller and revivifying the dialogue that they started decades ago.”

Jason recently launched a series of non-commercial micro-documentaries exploring the co-evolution of human and technology, the latest of which was called “stunning” by TED Conference owner and curator, Chris Anderson. Jason has recently spoken at The Singularity Summit in NYC and the DLD Conference in Munich, and his work was featured at The Economist World in 2012 Ideas Festival.

Silva’s work has been featured in The Economist, Vanity Fair, Forbes and Wired, among many others. Silva was also featured as part of the GAP ‘Icons’ campaign.
