#UrbanPixel | Our Urban Sunrises & Sunsets
#UrbanPixel – A feature series on Urban Times that documents the issues and scenes of the urban landscape through photography. By visually representing an interesting topic, concern or element of our cities, we hope to create a catalogue of solutions-based content that treats the eye. We are encouraging participation from everyone! So if you feel you have the adequate photography and backstory, send us a tweet @theurbantimes, include the #UrbanPixel hashtag, and a link to the photo piece so we can re-tweet our favorites, and include them in future #UrbanPixel posts. Read the full instructions on the next page.

Last week’s Urban Weather post was chilly to say the least. There’s been heavy snow in a lot of parts of the world, and you delivered the photos. This week, we’re going to try and “warm” #UrbanPixel up a bit by featuring Urban sunrises & sunsets.
It’s no secret this daily celestial occurrence make for some beautiful photos. But sunrises and sunsets in urban settings are even more stunning (at least I think). Not only do cityscapes add more interest to the composition of the photograph, but pollution and particulates present in a city’s air can actually make this daily phenomenon more impressive by creating bolder colors and adding texture in the sky.
So tweet us some of your best sunrise & sunset photography and tell us a little bit about your experience! Just make sure you follow the directions at the bottom of the post. We can’t wait to see them!
About My Photos:
The 8 photos below were all taken in Chicago at various times of the year. I’ve arranged them in order from the time the sun is just approaching horizon, to just after it’s fallen out of view. More information on the individual photos is available after each photo. Enjoy!
The sun approaches the Eastern horizon behind Lake Michigan, as seen from the rooftop of the John Hancock Building.
The sun bursts through a distant cloud bank above Lake Michigan. Navy Pier and Lake Point Tower are still mostly in shadow in the foreground.
The rising sun kisses the tallest towers in Chicago, while the steel and concrete “canyons” remain in shadow.
The sun approaches the horizon as it sets for the day over the industrious Southwest side of Chicago.
A highly textured, and colorful, bank of clouds rolls in just as the sun reaches the horizon along the BNSF railroad in Chicago.
The sun still lights up a portion of the sky to the West as dusk settles in upon Chicago’s Pilsen neighbourhood.
As the sun has disappeared below the horizon, twilight falls over the skyline of Chicago.
Looking Northwest over the city of Chicago as the sun sets for the day, and the night creeps in.
Full Instructions
If you’d like to have one of your urban photos featured in an upcoming #UrbanPixel post, check out the below instructions. We love being social, but a few rules helps us make sure we can feature your photos in an efficient manner!
1. Follow @theurbantimes on Twitter (so that we can direct message you if we wish to use your photo).
2. Tweet the photo(s) to us @theurbantimes, and make sure to include “#UrbanPixel” in the tweet. (The best way to get your photo seen on twitter is to make sure ‘@theurbantimes‘ is not at the start of your tweet but somewhere in the body – this will allow your tweet to become searchable to all and not private).
3. If we think your photo adequately meets the current #UrbanPixel theme, @theurbantimes will respond to you with an email address. When we do, please send us your photo(s) and a brief description or backstory. Note: The submitted photos must be at least 990 pixels wide to qualify.
While we can’t include all of the photo we receive in #UrbanPixel posts, we appreciate every tweet we get! Good luck, and happy urban-shooting.
